Ogun APC Rally: The National Embarrassment
It was unfortunate the incident that happened yesterday in Ogun state, wherein the president of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the APC was embarrassed and almost assaulted in the course of his reelection campaign. The incident is to say the least disturbing.
The mundane and crude kind of politics played in this part of the world and which has continued to rear its head is very unfortunate, and the fact that it has continued to show up virtually in each of the election circles shows that we are yet to learn and somehow have preferred to stick below the board.
It was in 2015 that a similar incident happened, involving the then sitting president Goodluck Jonathan. That incident, reprehensible in its tastes had happened in Bauchi state when the then PDP presidential candidate was just like in the present circumstance out to hunt for votes to be reelected.
Jonathan and his entourage were pelted with stones. That act, very distasteful and insubordinating was condemned for the insensitivity it was. Today, I also speak out and condemn this show of shame and insult to President Buhari.
The case scenario between that of GEJ and Buhari were different, although. Whereas it was somehow understandable why detest was the reason for the antagonistic show against Jonathan who was coming from the PDP into a core APC state, it leaves much to wonder in the case of Buhari, who is visiting one of his party's hold.
Regardless of the dissatisfaction within the internal body politics of the APC- which is perceived widely as the pressure behind the furnace, the person of the president deserves some respect. And what happened yesterday was the height of disrespect.
It is condemnable, for it would have indeed been a national tragedy if the president was wounded in this show of flying madness.
