Today, the international community marks the 2017 World Humanitarian Day.

This is a day set aside by the United Nations to reflect on our commitments toward helping others especially those whose vulnerability and helplessness call out for support and encouragement.

World's Humanitarian Day is all about moving out of ourselves and meeting the needs of the next person, that person who is in genuine need. It is, even as much as we can remain within ourselves, about thinking of the other person; what we can do and are doing to impact upon them. World Humanitarian Day is about others, it is about selflessness.

Our gifts, talents and resources must be seen to have some impacts in the lives of others. Critically, our resources should be used for the service of others. This is the reflection that today brings and the expression it excites.

In the words of the great civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr, the most persistent and urgent question is "What are you doing for others?"

That statement by MLK as always remains very pressing and provoking even unto this day. It is very importantly a question we should ask ourselves, individually and collectively.

May today be another reminder of how you must use what you have for the true service to others, to humanity.

The ending of a year brings a binary fusion of emotions: that of stocktaking and that of expectations. Very applauding, it was, to hear of the news of the resignation of the minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun. It's very commendable because it is one act very rare in this our clime. It just seems that the penchant for relevance and money has denied the vast majority of the people that essential sense of integrity. That denial is one that has brought about the desire to cling unto power even in the midst of opprobrious criticism to just step down. We've had several instances were public officials formed deaf ears to scathing allegations against their persons and offices until some powers force them out.
