Chika Odionyemma: The Philanthropist That FBI Indicted
The list released by the US Justice Department has sent ripples within the Nigerian landscape as people, especially those close to and familiar with the names there couldn't come to terms with the shock of the revelation.
Most of the names are indigenes of the South-eastern state of Imo, whose lifestyles have been something always on the people's lips. Those who know them attest to how they have myriad of investments scattered around town and how they live larger than life.
Chika Odionyemma is one of the persons on FBI’s 77-man list of suspected Nigerian fraudsters. His listing is one of those that came with much shock to many. The founder of the Nwakanwa Foundation has been known to be a philanthropist, promoter of youths and largely charitable and curiously, a role model.
His questionable rise to fortune brought him a widespread fame that soon began to see him frolicking with the high and mighty. He was the talk of the town in Imo state, his name dotting the news media, churches and social gatherings. He was described as one the young ones should emulate.
Nwakanwa, as Mr Odionyemma is fondly called has begun to pave his way into the politics of his state, where by virtue of his money he has supported politicians and won their good will. He has, at one time been applauded by Rochas Okorocha, the immediate past governor of the state. The young man was appointed into the inauguration committee of Emeka Ihedioha, governor of Imo state immediately after the later was declared elected.
There are reports that he pumped money into the campaign of Ihedioha in the build-up to the March governorship election. He made no modesty of his support for the new governor's ambition, flaunting across the capital city centre billboards with bold inscription of his endorsement.
According to sources, Odionyenma, who hails from Amakaohia-Uratta, Owerri north local government area of Imo, disguises as someone who had interest in real estate, indeed as one of the young people blazing the trail in this sector.
It is left to be wondered if Chika Odionyemma would heed to the admonition of the federal government for those indicted to turn themselves in, to clear his name. After the FBI list was released, the suspect shut all his known social media accounts and went into hiding.
