Soldiers Gang Rape AAU Undergraduate

A female undergraduate student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Ondo state was alleged to have been gang-raped by some soldiers at a checkpoint.

This was said to have happened in the course of a stop-and-search along the Ikare Akoko road in Akoko North LGA of the state on Wednesday while the victim alongside others were on a journey.

For me, it's a feeling of huge unfortunacy how that we get to hear this, and very worrisome how that this unfortunate action is said to have been perpetrated by men, who ordinarily by virtue of their obligation and the fact that they are paid by taxpayers money ought to serve and protect the public from ills such as this.

It's a grave offence against sense of duty and conscience, especially when one realizes how the incident happened.

This female student was spotted in the vehicle she was together with her colleagues (for whatever reasons) and was literally ordered to disembark, while the others were similarly coerced to just move on. Just move on, leaving one of them behind? It will look absurd, but that absurdity they had to oblige; for evidently they were subdued by fear!

This is a common experience of the common citizen vis-a-vis the Nigerian army: it is one of highfalutin show of power and subjugation. The Nigerian man or woman looses sanity, courage and reason when besought by a soldier- whether or not gun-wielding. You better be or you have yourself to blame; for they're brutish and mean.

The above is the one's on description of the Nigerian army. Any wonder then why the other students had to opt for what was absurd, to leave behind their colleague, who later was to be found to be a victim of multiple rape?

If, going by reports of the identification of one of the major culprits in this dastardly act by some of the students is anything true, I call on the relevant institutions, to wit the military hierarchy right from brigade command, to the army headquarters and the Nigerian police, must act and quickly to to serve justice to this girl and forestall recurrence.
