INDABOSKI: A Consequence of a People's Failure of Faith
First and very importantly, I must say that the purpose of this piece is not to delve into the tensed issue regarding Ada Jesus, the consideration or otherwise of her pleas for forgiveness and all the sort. So many opinions already have been woven around it. But rather I'd seek to talk here about the theatrics of the popular Odumeje in a rather broader view and how it relates to people and their expression of faith.
For me, it's totally ridiculous and practically inexplicable how people, in the search for spiritual enlightenment and faith-deepening, end up exhibiting features characteristic of sheer gullibility and deep faith-failure that discountenance the very reason that supposedly prodded them. The trend seems to be more profound in our clime, as the deeply religious people we are.
How else can one explain the place of spiritual rejuvenation in a situation where people are seen to submit themselves to be cajoled into dehumanizing and obviously ludicrous gesticulations. They're sometimes beaten and literally subjected to life-threatening situations and yet they sheepishly admit same as acts of faith. What egregious faith is that?
What is faith-execution and edifying about a situation where someone is obviously made caricature of in mockery of what should be a spiritual essence while such watches fixatedly and helplessly (and sometimes smilingly), just because they look for solution to life's challenges?
But carefully, I've come to appreciate the underlying driver for this inordinate quest for spiritual takeaway that has led many people into falling blindly for cheap metaphysical propaganda. It is the desire to prosper without reason and enjoy the goodness of life without conscientious waiting that pushes them into such convoluted view of God, which turns to be a gradual yielding to mental slavery.
The desperation to get off life's challenges has led people lurching in rapid disposition for available solutions and wherever there's such an inkling. It's selfsame desperation to meet up with pumped-up expectations and/or overcome such challenges that has given in many to easy submission to the whims of whoever answereth to the title of a man/woman of God.
Nowadays, people do unimaginable things and submit to the unthinkable insofar as it's suggested to bring them solution and is recommended and declared by the man of God, who many of such have arbitrarily designated as their demigods (and even God). It's such grave disillusionment that engenders such self deification as perpetrated by the likes of Indaboski- the so-called 'liquid-metal'.
For a while I've watched Odumeje (alias Indaboski, Liquid metal, Bahose and the so many others he ascribe to himself), trying to understand his mechanics and methodology of execution. And I have come to conclude that what he posits is religious exhibitionism. Yet annoyingly and very worrisomely, this mundane exhibition is one so hugely appreciated and applauded by those who considers for what he asserts.
To say that I just wonder how comfortable people around Indaboski feel and how believing they are of him (about his contents and what he claims to be) even in the midst of his entire self-effacing theatrics is to be the least honest. It beats me strangely into pondering on how our people appreciate the Almighty and how sincere is the believe in him.
If Scripture is well studied beyond mere carrying and reading the Bible, the fact about what rewards await those who seek God diligently and his righteousness would be very well understood. God is a compassionate, loving father just as he's a God of process, time and season.
However, the kind of faith this present generation assert is the type that places confidence only on the assurances of bliss. This kind of faith is not anchored on God and the believe that he is Lord and that his will ought to prevail; it is such that seeks for wonders and miracles, and so imminently too. The hypocritical kind Jesus which assures only the signs of Jonah would be given!
The desire for quick fix in the challenges posed by poverty, health issues and the ready slide to inordinate ambition has for ages being there, albeit growing geometrically by the day. We've had Eddie Nnawgu and others. They were so many, you could remember. Each had their followers or passionate adherents, who believed in them and professed their uniquely dramatic methodologies. Undeniably, you and I know how each ended.
Very well, the trend shall continue just as it had being in the past and even after this current Indaboski era: and sustained similarly by the patronage of those with same whipping syndrome to quickly enjoy life. But the truth which shall remain is that God cannot be mocked, he's a gracious rewarder of those who diligently seek him and trust him regardless of how and the pace he operates.
Just as the scripture admonished, we must endeavor to do the basic requirement of true and sublime faith: seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. And until my people get to understand this truth and absolutely rely on the ability and processes of God, they shall continue to be elements of theatrical exhibitions, and one which eventually is regretted at the end!
