Saraki's Presidential Declaration, And The Wishy Washy

On August 30th, the Senate President and one that has been in the eyes of the storm, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki made his declaration of interest to run for the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Senate president had cleverly cashed in on the opportunity of the interactive forum organised for young aspirants and chieftains of the PDP by the Not Too Young movement to make known his intention,  bringing a kind of suspicion as to whether that has been the driver of his coldness to the Buhari regime.

But then, to keen followers of political development down here, what Saraki did by his declaration was long expected. The reason is very clear,  especially as coming from two fronts.

The first is this. We have known the man Saraki as a very ambitious man, who seeks always to improve himself and his pedestal at every available opportunity. His ambitiousness has seen him grow politically from the level of a special assistant to the president to two-term governor of Kwara state and subsequently the Senate president.

The second front could as well be seen to be drawn from the first. Just of recent, we've seen how the man has been in the eyes of the storm, enmeshed in one criminal case or the other. The asset declaration case, the Senate rule scandal and the recent Offa robbery shriek: all have attracted attention and all have made Saraki widely known. It is believed that in Nigeria today, politically, the man is the most publicised person next to President Buhari.

The court cases he has won, the allegations and all the attentions he's generated; all have brought with them a kind of fame for him and the needed opportunity to cave in and cash on. He has so utilised that space. His declaration is seen as standing up when the ovation is loudest.

The declaration of Saraki to run for the presidency, no doubt, would change the narrative. Although, I think his decision to contest would be one that would add spice to the electoral process but  the impact would not be beyond the ordinary, that's of a declaration that just raised dust and then calmly settled.

I wish to see a Saraki that will take his interest to the last end. It will be disconcerting of him to declare just for a trial. The fear is expressed in view of the permutation that the man would just be seen to contest for the president, a trial which he doesn't bank fully on.

In other words, Saraki is seen as such that when his presidential ambition is flopped by denial of the presidential ticket of the PDP, his new party, he makes a turn back to the Senate where he's been assured of an automatic ticket. That is to me, a grand selfish politics, which is disconcerting.

However, I beg to add that if and only if Saraki's declaration of interest is genuine and one that he'll see to the end, I wish him good luck. After all,  he's a Nigerian and he's shown he's worth the salt contesting for the presidency.
