NASS Invasion: An act of brigandage

It was on Monday, 6th of August, that the Nigeria National Assembly witnessed another desecration where illegality took up muscle to assert its ugly strength. Times and times we've seen arguments, quarrels, fights and outright kicking and boxing happen here.

But then, as it happened today, it was really indecorous to have seen security men taken over the vicinity of the NASS and preventing lawmakers from gaining entrance.

The politics of defection that has seen senators and house of representatives members switching political party alliance and which seems to have culminated in the recent decamping of Senate President Bukola Saraki has, as expected, drifted to insinuations about the impeachment of Bukola Saraki.

It is sad that, with the insinuations and the unfolding events that seem to give validity to it, what ought to be of national concern has been reduced to Saraki. The way the whole issue of defection and the NASS right to autonomy has been trivialised by the desperate attempt to have Saraki removed is very provocative.

It is very unfortunate how the DSS has reduced and desecrated a democratic institution. By the unconscionable act of invading the National Assembly complex, the DSS has shown how insensitive and disrespectful its management is to democratic principle.

There is absolutely no explanation for the unruly blockade of the National Assembly by masked security men said to be operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS.

The firing of Lawal Daura, the DG of DSS should be just an indication of the high powered scrutiny that should take place in order to unravel this wanton senseless illegality by institution that ought to defend democracy.

How have we so degenerated in democratic values and civilisation good taste?

Whatever be the grouse between the party which seems to feel the heat of cross carpeting and the gaining party and whatever perception of bad blood that runs in between, these actors must realise that the National Assembly is the hallowed chamber of all Nigerians, where matters that promote their cause should be the core issue.
