The Stake Before New Imo State Governor
The task before the new administration in Imo state, from indication, has been set out even before it came on board. The previous administration of Emeka Ihedioha, though short-lived, was able to set in motion what could be said to be the path to a sustainable development for the state.
It makes no overemphasis to recall the many strides of the Ihedioha administration which restored sanity to administrative framework. There was the stabilization and reinvigoration of the state civil service. Gradually, and the Imo state civil service was beginning to get life and ultimately assuming its statutory responsibility as the machinery of governance.
The singular effort to bring financial probity in all dealings of government by the eventual harmonization of the revenue collection process is such a hugely commended step. The introduction of the the concept of the Treasury Single Account, TSA, in the state has not only brought fiscal discipline but effectively boosted the internally generated revenue of the state to such an amount as had never been.
The old people, who seemingly had committed the strength of their youths in the building process of the state and are now retired, have begun to find lease of life as the hitherto cumbersome and 'imaginative' pensions due them have been restored to such a seamless process through its routing to electronic means. Now, pensioners receive their due as at when due with such certainty and ease as could be by an electronic means.
Robust framework has been put in place, that if given committed attention, would see to the transformation of the state. Indeed, within the seven months period of its sway in office, the past administration laid a foundation so strong for the rebuilding of Imo state that a full implementation would lead to a gradual improvement of the socioeconomic life of the state.
The new governor has been given a pathway to work with. Governor Hope Uzodinma has had all set out for him to deliver Imo to the dream of many of her citizens. There would be no point trying to assert self recognition by the introduction of bogus initiatives that at most would be just unnecessary duplication of programs. Indeed, he could assert his input to the transformation of the state, and that's chiefly by setting in motion these directions and effortly committing to the good framework before him.
For all Imo citizens, whose annoyance in the recent Supreme Court judgement, beyond whatever perceived error of that judgement, stems naturally from the attachment they've had with the noble ideas of the rebuilding Imo process set in motion by the immediate past administration of Emeka Ihedioha, we could only take the reality of the finality of the verdict and let the past remain where it should be. There's a new governor in place, and ruing over the disconcerted judgement would be a distraction from the obvious reality and would so much deny our state of the common commitment needed.
The new governor needs our support, and we must do well to accord him same for the purpose of continuing this journey for the greatness of our state. We must continue to raise the bar for effective governance and must demand accountability and responsible governance, just as always, from the new administration headed by Mr Uzodinma.
It's true that governance is a continuum, and Senator Hope Uzodinma as Imo new must live to this principle by thinking just beyond the impressionism of politics and see Imo as a project that requires a continuous pull of energy to build. There's only one Imo and it's building must not be one so haphazard and disruptive at each step, but one that needs be a sustained process of committed genuine agenda to build and develop.
God bless Imo state.
