Five Killed, Many Injured In Florida Airport

At least five people have been confirmed dead with over eight critically injured after a gunman attacked passengers at the Lauderdale Fort airport in the State of Florida, United States on Friday.

The incident, which occurred Friday afternoon, at 1pm local time, saw the young man who the Florida senator identified as Esteban Santiago, shooting at passengers as the made to collect their items at the luggage section.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man, who had boarded a plane from Alaska to Florida, opened fire and started shooting indiscriminately at passengers as he disembarked and made for his baggage.

Another eyewitnessed, who said the laptop bag he had strapped on his back had saved him from been killed, said that most of the people affected were co-passengers of the gunman. No altercation was reported while aboard.

Meanwhile, athorities said he was properly checked and was seen with a gun, but in line with checks procedures, he declared the gun, which was kept separate until the landing. According to CNN report, upon arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, he picked up the carrying case at baggage claim, took out the gun and started firing, according to law enforcement sources.

The Florida Senator Bill Nelson had said that a military ID was discovered on the man but said it was yet to ascertain whether it was a current one. Santiago had served in the Puerto Rico National Guard and the Alaska Army National Guard.

However, authorities have said there is yet no indication as suggest a terror motive, but that Santiago is suspected to have mental issue as it hss been reported of how he claimed to have heard a voice asking him to join ISIS.
